Introduction
While you recover, there may be time to see a little of Moldova. How much you can do depends on your treatment, on how you feel and on what your doctor advises, so ask before you plan anything. This guide shows what is within easy reach of Chișinău, so you can choose quiet, low-effort outings for the days between your treatment and your final check.
First, ask your doctor
Every treatment and every recovery is different. Before you plan an outing, ask your doctor:
- How much walking, sitting in a car or standing is fine in the first days?
- Is it fine to drink alcohol, for example at a wine tasting, given your treatment and any medication?
- Do you need to avoid sun, heat, cold or crowds?
- Which days do you need to be at the clinic, and how much free time is there before your final check?
The length of the monitoring period is decided by your doctor, and you cannot fly during it. Plan outings inside that window, and never at the expense of a check-up.
In Chișinău
The capital is compact, and much of the centre can be seen on foot at your own pace. Options that suit a quiet day include:
- Ștefan cel Mare Public Garden, described as the city's oldest park, with paths, fountains and shade.
- Valea Morilor Park, built around a lake, where you can walk slowly and sit down whenever you need to.
- The Botanical Garden, a large green space of about 104 hectares.
- Museums, such as the National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History and the National Art Museum. They are indoors and easy to see in an hour or two.
- The Classical Alley, a short promenade lined with busts of Bessarabian writers and poets.
Cafés and restaurants are plentiful, and a slow lunch is a perfectly good outing too.
Wine cellars near the city
Moldova is known for its wine, and two of its best-known cellars are a short drive from Chișinău. Both are in underground tunnels with a constant, cool temperature of around 12 to 14 °C, so bring a warm layer even in summer.
- Cricova lies about 15 km north of the city. A guided visit usually includes a ride through the tunnels and a tasting, and takes roughly 1.5 to 2.5 hours.
- Mileștii Mici is about 18 km from Chișinău. Its tunnels were dug out for building stone before being turned into wine cellars, and guided tours end with a tasting.
Whether a tasting is suitable depends on your treatment and on any medication, so get your doctor's agreement first. You can also take the tour and skip the tasting.
Further out: Orheiul Vechi
About 46 km north of Chișinău lies Orheiul Vechi (Old Orhei), a cultural and natural reserve in Orhei National Park. It combines a river valley landscape with a cave monastery and the remains of medieval settlements, and it has been a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status since 2017. It is a popular day trip, but it means a longer drive and walking on uneven ground. It therefore suits a later, stronger day of your stay, and only with your doctor's approval.
Simple tips for a recovery-friendly outing
- Keep it short and leave time to rest afterwards.
- Wear comfortable shoes and clothes, and protect yourself from the sun.
- Carry the clinic's contact details and your hotel address.
- Choose quiet times of day, and avoid lifting, climbing or sudden movements unless your doctor says it is fine.
- Do not book anything non-refundable until you know your schedule.
