Introduction
More and more patients from the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Germany look abroad for treatment, often because of long waiting times or high prices at home. Moldova is a smaller and less obvious option than some other destinations, but it is worth a closer look. AxiomMed is a facilitator: we do not treat patients ourselves. Where is Moldova?
Moldova is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe, between Romania to the west and Ukraine to the north, east and south. Its capital and largest city is Chișinău, and about 2.4 million people live in the country. Romanian is the official language and Russian is also widely spoken. Moldova is not a member of the EU, but it was granted EU candidate status in June 2022.
Why consider Moldova?
Prices for many treatments, such as dental care, cosmetic procedures, hair transplants and surgery, are often considerably lower than in Western Europe. How much you save depends on the treatment, the clinic and your own situation, so we always give you a written quote before you decide. Moldova is also close: a flight takes about three hours, and the clinics in Chișinău work with international patients.

Healing in a calm environment
After treatment you usually stay in a hotel while the doctor monitors your recovery. When the doctor is satisfied, you have a final check, which is free of charge as part of the post-op check, and then you get the green light to fly home. Practical points
- The currency is the Moldovan leu (MDL).
- The time zone is UTC+2 in winter and UTC+3 in summer, one hour ahead of the Netherlands.
- Check the current entry requirements for your nationality before you book.
- Because Moldova is not in the EU, check what your insurance covers abroad, including planned treatment. You can use your own policy, or ask us about travel insurance through our partner insurer HanseMerkur.
What to weigh honestly
Moldova has fewer flight connections than larger destinations, and it is a less familiar place, so some people feel more comfortable staying closer to home. A low price is only one factor: ask who will treat you, what is included and what the aftercare looks like, whichever country you choose.
